THE COURSE

The Michelangelo Screenwriting Program closely follows the method Paul uses when he rewrites his own scripts and when he supervises student rewrites. His book, Rewrite (published in March 2008), is the basis of the course, but class focuses on the needs of students. You are limited to one script for the session. One month before the course, you must mail a copy of the script to be rewritten so that Paul can read it before the start.

Each seminar will be three hours long, with a total of ten seminars during the two week program. (A rough schedule appears in the column on the left.) Paul will keep at least an hour a day of formal office hours to discuss individual issues. The first Sunday morning, Paul will hold a short orientation and a longer discussion of each script to launch the process. Plan to arrive on Saturday and expect to be writing by Sunday afternoon.

Except on the first Sunday, class hours will run from 4:30 to 7:30 pm, with dinner to follow. Mornings will be for writing, afternoons for more writing, reading other students' pages, or trips to local villages. Class hours may change according to student preferences.

The course will cover (straight out of the Rewrite table of contents):

  • Clarifying Story and Structure for Impact
  • The Powerful Protagonist
  • The Worthy Antagonist
  • Ensuring Dynamic Scenes
  • Making Descriptions Leap off the page
  • Life Support For Your Protagonist
  • Paring it down
  • Where Am I?
  • The Right Look
  • Finishing

Of course we will review your new pages every day.

With any luck and a demonic intensity, you should be able to finish a complete rewrite in the time allotted. If not, you will definitely have a blueprint for your new draft and probably be many pages into it.

Printers and paper are provided. There is no Internet access in the villa, but Internet cafes can be found in the nearby towns of Umbertide and Cortona.
